Tuesday, October 23, 2007 Lance Hahn - J Church
I didn't know Lance Hahn personally but it doesn't mean we didn't have a relationship. Prophylaxis and Quetzalcoatl are probably two of the records I cherish the most. I own more J Church records than any other band in my collection. I've made a point to try to buy everything I see in a record store that I don't already own and I by no stretch have anything resembling a complete collection. Dude was prolific, no doubt. An insiring guy who could churn out amazing punk tunes one after another. He lived by his punk ethics and whether he meant to or not, he showed how to live by example. I learned a thing or two from Lance Hahn.
Tomorrow night I'm meeting some friends to have a toast in his honor. To celebrate his life and songs. I'm trying to recall every time I've seen J Church play... Let's see what I can remember. 1) Red Herring Cafe - Champaign/Urbana - 1994ish. I had been waiting a few years to see J Church. I remember singing along (maybe my first time singing along at a show) to Kathy. I probably ate a fast food hamburger that day. Somewhere I have pictures from that evening. I can't recall who else played the show. Afterwards Lance hung out and was interviewed by me and two other zine dudes at the same time. I think we talked a lot about the normal pop-punk topics of the time. Major labels, etc. 2) Fireside Bowl - Chicago - 1995ish. I think they played with Tetsuo and the Blue Meanies. In the hundreds of times I went to the Fireside after that I never ever saw the venue as packed as it was that night. 3) Congress Theater - Chicago - 2001ish. They toured with Propagandhi and Avail. Shitty venue. Most awesomest lineup ever. Jawbreaker drummer did the tour. I remember being way stoked to hear a few tracks from The Drama of Alienation. 4) Fireside Bowl - Chicago - 2003ish. The lamest turnout ever. Like 25 people there. I remember there being a crusty punk mom with her super tiny baby there. Not too stoked on that. I remember there being lots of friends there. I probably knew 75% of the people there. I bought a live CD from Lance that evening for $5. Other Lance Hahn related notes: * "Nostalgic For Nothing" is one of my favorite phrases. The girl on the cover of the album is way cute. * In college I had a bookshelf made of milkcrates, made of milkcrates. * I still don't own the "Kittums In A Coma" 7" even though it's most likely the best 7" ever. * "Tide of Fate" almost made me want to go camping at one point in my life. Fucking hippie. Thank you Lance Hahn.

Strife - Through And Through
"There's only one truth". Towards the end of Strife's cycle as a band I saw them play and the singer openly announced that this song wasn't about straight edge but a love song. Whatever.... I would love to see this band another 94 times. This band makes me do the most air drumming ever! Endpoint Probably the most important hardcore band to ever come out of the midwest. By The Grace Of God I haven't listened to BTGOG in ages so watching this video brings a lot back. The breakdown in the middle where Pennington starts yelling "Are you a slave?" kills me. One of my favorite endings to a song ever. Snapcase - Steps One of my favorite Snapcase songs (bonus! filmed at the Fireside). I still think they're one of the most progressive hardcore bands ever. It tears me up that I can't see their reunion shows coming up. FIRESTORM I let the awesomeness speak for itself. The Refused Two words... MOTHER FUCK Undertow Check out the dude on stage who's just hanging out and gets thrown off at the end. "I just want you back!" This song fucking kills! Unbroken Labels: by the grace of god, earth crisis, endpoint, firestorm, hardcore, snapcase, strife, the refused, unbroken, undertow
Friday, October 5, 2007 Last night I saw some old friends who are in a not so new band called The Little Ones. Some of the most incredible poppy, fun, clappy, dancy stuff I've ever heard! Good dudes and good times! Ed and Ian came from one of my old favorites Sunday's Best. It was really great to catch up and a pleasant surprise to see some old out of town friends back doing music and blowing minds! "Lovers Who Uncover" video Sunday's Best MP3s "Saccharine" "The Salt Mines of Santa Monica" ![]() Down the street is where the Cubs will hopefully not be losing their 3rd straight game thus ruining my chance at seeing Chicago go off in a flurry of pure chaos. My friend Poindexter gave me a last minute call to finally go see them from a rooftop a few weeks ago. ![]() Back to The Metro. More friends came back a few weeks back to do a reunion show. Good to say goodbye appropriately as I missed their last final show. why "live in chicago"? Joan of Arc made a record called "Live in Chicago" and I thought was really good with good artwork and good songs. When I started doing this I had envisioned that it would be focused primarily on my home thus "Live in Chicago" became the title. I've always liked it because I've never known if it was "live" like "I live in Chicago" or "live" like "I saw that band live". I live in Chicago thus it's that "live in Chicago".
